Layer 8. Energy optimisation

How does a pod behave as a grid asset rather than a grid load? Grid interconnection, not silicon supply, is becoming the binding constraint on new AI capacity. A facility that can modulate and shift load in response to grid conditions can connect faster and at lower cost than one that cannot.

The Engineering Question

The engineering question

How does a pod behave as a grid asset rather than a grid load?

Grid interconnection, not silicon supply, is becoming the binding constraint on new AI capacity. A facility that can modulate and shift load in response to grid conditions can connect faster and at lower cost than one that cannot. Coral's position is that a geographically distributed fleet of pods across multiple utility territories is a more valuable and more dispatchable flexibility asset than a single large campus, and that this is a revenue line rather than a cost saving.

Decision

What Coral decided

Partner for the platform

Partner for the grid-interaction platform. Own the fleet aggregation layer that turns many small pods into one dispatchable resource.

Share the revenue

Share demand-response revenue with site hosts as a deployment incentive. A host who is paid for flexibility is a host who says yes faster.

Conversion loss is heat

Treat in-pod power conversion loss as a thermal specification. Every point of conversion inefficiency inside a sealed enclosure is heat Coral has to remove, which is a constraint most modular vendors do not appear to model.

One fluid, one thermal system

Extend the dielectric architecture to energy storage. A pod that already contains a dielectric thermal architecture should not contain an air-cooled battery. Immersion-cooled storage improves transient power capability, removes thermal runaway propagation as a failure mode, and makes the enclosure architecturally coherent: one fluid, one thermal system, compute and storage together.

Unsolved

What is still unsolved

Optimal dispatch policy for a distributed fleet where each site faces a different tariff, a different grid carbon intensity, a different workload mix and a different heat offtake contract. This is a genuinely unsolved optimisation problem and Coral believes it is the most commercially valuable one in the sector.
